The duo were welcomed to Central Park to sign autographs and pose for photos as part of the Australian Football League's Toyota Retiring Legends Lap of Honour, which was open to the public.
However, when Raeck's mother Melissa made him get out of bed and get dressed, he had no idea what was about to happen next.
The 17 year old had the opportunity to sit down with the retiring St Kilda players and gain an insight into a football career, as well as dealing with and overcoming injuries.
Raeck, whose season this year was cut short after the onfield incident that left him with facial fractures to the eye socket and cheekbone, had been playing with the Swifts under 17 team.
"It was heartbreaking to watch the boys play finals and have to sit on the sidelines," Raeck said.
Since having his face operated on, Raeck is still trying to deal with the physical and psychological effects.
After nerve damage to the right side of his mouth he is still completely numb and not expected to recover fully until 12 months after his operation.
Meeting Hayes and Koschitzke meant more to Raeck than it would to most youngsters, as he continues to battle through his recovery.
"It was a great experience to be a part of," Raeck said.
"They helped me a lot just talking about serious injuries and that kind of thing. I'm really grateful."
While admitting it would take some time to regain his confidence on the football field, Raeck expects to make a full recovery and to play some senior football next year.
"I will definitely think twice next time I go in for the ball, but I'm sure I will get back into the groove after a few games," he said.
The Pimpinio player involved in the incident has since apologised to Raeck, which has helped with the healing process.
Raeck and his younger brother Sam capped off a great day with a photo and autographs and even though Raeck barracks for Richmond Tigers it will be a day to remember for a long time to come.
