Three-year-old purebred Weimaraner, Keira was killed in a suspected poisoning incident last month.

Taking to the Stawell Times-News Facebook page to share their condolences, residents expressed shock and horror at what had happened.

"Even though this is a horrific story I am so glad it has hit the paper, getting word out on what has been happening will hopefully make people more aware and be on the lookout for their neighbours' pets and for suspicious looking people," Sue Tyrrell said.

Linda J Elliott said the story had shaken her up and that those responsible deserved no more than 'some old school justice'.

"Ever since I read this I've been checking my yard before letting my dog out and also don't leave him out for long periods of time," she said.

"All I can say is I hope the names of the disgusting excuses for human beings that did this come to light."

Romy Young called on all Stawell residents to unite and take the extra care necessary to ensure not just themselves, but their neighbours and their pets are safe.

"This horrified me with the first post and will continue to horrify me," she said.

"Thinking of the Beaton family and let's look out for our neighbours."

Jo Smith said she struggled to understand the randomness of what she labelled a 'cowards' act'.

"Keira was obviously a quiet, indoors dog who bothered no one. Why poison her?" she said.

"My dog is nearly 11, if someone did this to him, I'd be devastated at such a horrible cruel act and I'd be doing more than banging fists or raising my voice at the Town Hall.

"I'm so very sorry to the Beaton Family and their poor children who will never understand why their best friend was taken away so senselessly.

"My thoughts are with you all at this sad time and I hope your pain eases over time."

Stawell police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death. A veterinary examination determined that Keira had a large piece of meat in her stomach with white powder on it at the time of her death.
