“Who is the father in Bunbury? The father of the twins?” Kamonthip Musikawong, who is known as “Joy,” asked in an email message.

Fairfax Media can reveal that Ms Kamonthip had no medical education or training before she founded the Bangkok-based company IVF Parenting in early 2013, as the largely unregulated surrogacy business began to boom in Thailand, with hundreds of couples coming from Australia to take part in commercial programs.

LinkedIn lists Ms Kamonthip as working in visa and language services before she founded the company, which advertised as specialising in surrogacy and in vitro fertilisation.

She was at Thailand’s Kasetsart University between 2002 and 2006 studying agricultural biotechnology, a collection of scientific techniques used to improve plants, animals and microorganisms.

For almost two years from 2010, Ms Kamonthip was participating in Au Pair, a program where a domestic assistant from a foreign country works for and lives as part of a family in a host country.

Before the ivfarenting.com website became inoperable early on Tuesday, it described how the company “began our journey years ago with an infertile couple with young intended mother who was born without a womb”.

“We assisted them the entire process until they got success on the fourth attempt and brought the baby home,” the company said.

“If you don’t give up we will never give up,” it said.

“We built our business through trust and connection and grow constantly through word of mouth.”

Gammy’s surrogate mother Pattharamon Janbua said she contacted Ms Kamonthip, who she claims still owes her money, through Facebook and was chosen by an Australian couple after providing personal details and photographs.

Ms Pattharamon said she was asked to have an abortion after it became known she was having twins, one of whom has Down syndrome, but she refused because of her Buddhist beliefs.

The Australian couple took the twin girl after both babies had been kept together in hospital for a month after the birth, leaving 21-year-old Ms Pattharamon to try to save the life of Gammy, who has a hole in his heart.

A fundraising campaign has raised almost $220,000 for Gammy.

Ms Kamonthip, who has not being answering her telephones since Fairfax Media revealed Gammy’s plight last week, said in an email she planned to do an interview with an Australian media organisation.

She declined to answer questions from Fairfax Media.

“If you don’t know the story, you better not say anything,” she wrote in an email.

“Be patient …I am not interested in talking to so many media. Thanks for offering,” she wrote.

Thai medical authorities on Monday announced an investigation into the Gammy case amid a crackdown on commercial surrogacy and IVF gender selection procedures.

IVF Parenting’s website claimed the company offered “a choice of clinics with the best success rates in Bangkok”.

Costs ranged from $US10,000 to $US35,000 “depending on the services you require”.

The company said it assisted intended parents “whether they are traditional couples, same-sex couples, or single parents to build a family through gestational surrogacy”.

It said surrogate mothers must be between 20 and 40 years old, have already given birth to at least one healthy baby, and have a healthy history of previous pregnancies.

She must also “willingly sign a contract agreeing to her role and responsibilities in the pregnancy”.
