Tall and powerful, Jodie Kenny is a marauding defender, charged with snuffing out scoring opportunities and being a fort in front of the Hockeyroos' goal.

It is at the other end of the field, however, that the 26-year-old Queenslander is making a name for herself at these Commonwealth Games. Another two goals in Australia's 3-0 defeat of England on the Glasgow Green on Monday not only careered the world No.2 side and hot favourites into the semi-finals but left Kenny with nine goals in four games, the tournament's leading scorer.

It is from set pieces at the top of the semi-circle where Kenny is proving lethal, her mastering of the drag flick from penalty corners a key asset in the Hockeyroos' march towards the gold medal playoff.

She was a late starter on the technique, but it doesn't show. Her goals either side of half-time helped sink England in the Australian women's final group game, having earlier posted hat-tricks in two other matches.

"I can't believe I've scored nine in the tournament. I'm really stoked to have scored so many and really happy with my performance again," Kenny said.

"We put in a lot of hours a week to get it right. It's a very specific skill so it takes a lot of practice. A lot of years have gone into that, so I'm just happy it's paying off now.

"I started doing it quite late so I've probably only been flicking for about six years or so. I've got the body for it. I've got the long levers, I'm nice and tall, so it's certainly something that's good for my body type. I picked it up quite quick which was good, it's just about trying to get the really good technique that goes along with it.

"I wasn't a penalty corner hitter before I started flicking so I loved obviously scoring a few goals off PCs. I just went from the hit to the flick."

Kenny and the Hockeyroos' other flickers such as Anna Flanagan have been receiving tuition over the past six months from former Kookaburra Luke Doerner, who could find the back of a goal during his international career. Doerner's focus on the craft is such that he is viewing every instance of it on Australian penalty corners and relaying his feedback to coach Adam Commens and the players in Glasgow.

"He kind of analyses every flick, every game," Kenny said. "He uses internet technology and goes through and reviews every flick that we do and gives us tips throughout the tournament and also flies over to Perth to help us out as well. He's been a great help."

Commens himself has been a major driver of the technique at the team's West Australian base.

"I had a lot of experience with a number of different coaches in Europe and when we came back we put a program in place to help build our drag flickers Anna (Flanagan), Jodie and we have a number of others that can do it as well," he said.

"Over the last six months they've been working with Luke Doerner who scored at a really high rate for the Australian men and I think he deserves a lot of credit for the results that we're seeing on the pitch."

The Hockeyroos could hardly be better placed after booking a spot in the last four, having scored 25 goals against Malaysia, Wales, Scotland and England and not conceding one.

Commens wasn't overly impressed by their display against world No.6 England but is pleased they now have a three-day break until Friday's semi-final after four games in five days.

"We were a little disjointed," Commens said.

"England are a class outfit and there is something in that, but to win 3-0 against a high quality opponent is a positive. But we needed a wake-up call to say more effort is needed."

"We've got a nice free day tomorrow and then two days of training leading into the semi-final and we'll be able to actually scout our opponent properly and have a real crack at them. It has been difficult to do so for the opponents we've played so far."
