Members split into smaller groups in an attempt to view or photograph the many species of birdlife within the park boundary.

This amounted to about 30 acres, most of which was either bushland or wetlands.

There is quite a variety of tracks to follow which allowed the birdwatchers the opportunity to view a wide range of birds.

After about two hours the group returned to the camp kitchen to compare notes and realised they had sighted more than 35 different species of birds.

The discovery was met with amazement by members considering the park is just on the outskirts of the township.

A short meeting followed where members decided to officially form as a Club with the intention in the near future to affiliate with Birdlife Australia, the peak birding body in Australia.

Most of the official positions within the club were filled, it is hoped the rest will be filled at the next meeting.

Grampians Bird Observers next outing will be held on Sunday, August 3. Members will meet at the TAFE carpark near the Stawell library at 9am.

The group intends to proceed to Lake Lonsdale and view a range of different birds.
