The incident occurred just after 10.30pm when the driver of the vehicle travelling west towards Stawell took evasive action to pull the truck to the side of the road.
The fire is believed to have been started by break pads before spreading to the second trailer which contained a pallet of machinery filters.
Two CFA units from Stawell and another from Great Western attended the fire with about 20 personnel taking almost an hour to bring the blaze under control.
Fire crews managed to contain the fire to the second trailer. The other trailer which was full of mixed product sustained only minor smoke damage.
Police and paramedics were called to the scene as a precaution. Ambulance crews treating a couple of people for the affects of smoke.
Traffic banked up close to eight kilometres on the Western Highway either side of Great Western, before the main arterial that links Melbourne and Adelaide was re-opened to traffic just before 1am.
