Northern Grampians Shire Council realigned the Y-intersection to create a T-intersection to slow traffic and increase vehicle visibility.
The project was completed under the 2013-2014 Capital Works Plan and is part of Council's Road Safety Treatment Program.
Cr Kevin Erwin said realigning the intersection would greatly improve road safety in a high traffic area.
"In the past, there have been instances where vehicles have gone straight through the intersection at speed without giving way to traffic. In some cases, this was due to a blind spot which prevented motorists from seeing oncoming traffic from Albion Road," he said.
"Because the Duke Street and Albion Road intersection is part of a school bus route, it gets extremely busy at school drop off and pick up times.
"As a result, council has taken a proactive approach to upgrade the intersection before a serious accident occurs."
In addition to protecting the safety of motorists and pedestrians, the project has addressed storm water drainage issues.
Cr Erwin said the benefits would extend to neighbouring properties.
"The work will improve storm water drainage in Duke Street," he said.
"Kerb and channel will direct storm water to pits, which will prevent it from entering private property."
