REGION - A new initiative launched by Wimmera Racing Club will give trainers greater incentive to enter their horses in non-TAB meetings throughout the Wimmera in 2013-14.
Wimmera Racing Club has launched the Trainers Bonus Series 2013-14, which will see a $5000 bonus up for grabs over the course of six non-TAB meetings during the season.
Meetings will be held at St Arnaud, Stawell, Nhill, Murtoa, Great Western and Warracknabeal. The first meeting in the series was conducted at St Arnaud last Saturday, featuring the St Arnaud Turf Club Weir's Supa IGA St Arnaud Cup.
Wimmera Racing Club Manager, Penny Penfold, said the club believed the bonus would be a great incentive for trainers to enter their horses in the non-TAB features throughout the 2013-14 season.
"We were looking at ways in which we could bolster horse numbers at our non-TAB meetings in the Wimmera," Ms Penfold said.
"We are confident the trainers bonus will help boost horse numbers at our non-TAB meetings, particularly strengthening the fields for our feature races," Ms Penfold said.
Wimmera Racing will pay a $5000 bonus to the trainer earning the most points throughout the non-TAB series of race meetings.
Points will be awarded in the feature race at each non-TAB meeting conducted in the Wimmera region throughout the season. Trainers will receive 10 points if their horse wins, seven points will be allocated for second place, five points for third and three points for fourth. All other unplaced runners will be allocated one point.
The trainer whose horses accrue the most points across all six heats will be declared the winner and claim the $5000 bonus.
Ms Penfold said the $5000 trainers bonus created a win-win situation for all
"The bonus will be a good incentive for trainers to tackle more than one of the non-TAB features in the Wimmera," she said.
"Not only will the trainers be supporting the club hosting the non-TAB meeting, they will also be giving themselves every opportunity to accumulate points to secure the $5000 bonus."
With the St Arnaud heat (Weir's Supa IGA St Arnaud Cup) having been run last weekend, the remaining designated feature races which make up the heats of the series are as follows:
Tuesday, November 5, 2013 - Stawell Racing Club, Eventide Homes BM 64 2000m.
