Hawthorn recruit Ben McEvoy will be a major drawcard at the Stawell Racing Club's Melbourne Cup Day races.
McEvoy, who crossed to the Hawks from St Kilda during the post-season trade, said he was looking forward to enjoying a social day out at the Stawell races and interacting with children during a series of Auskick clinics.
"It should be a good day, I'm really looking forward to it," he said.
"We will certainly enjoy looking around what might one day be our local haunt. It will also be my first trip to the Stawell races so we're pretty excited. "Hopefully the weather will be good and it will be a great day out."
McEvoy has agreed to take part in some handball and kicking drills with youngsters throughout the afternoon and will also autograph footballs and other items for youngsters.
As an added bonus, children attending the race day on Tuesday, November 5 will leave the Stawell Racecourse with their own football. They may even wish to have it signed by Ben before they leave.
McEvoy said he was excited by the prospect of playing for reigning premier Hawthorn in season 2014, but was busy this week working on his farm at Joel Joel and his brother-in-law's farm at Landsborough West.
He said he would commence training with the Hawks on November 18.
"We've got a few weeks up our sleeve before then, but there's plenty to do here as well, so I will be getting as much done as I can," he said.
"It will be good to take time away from the farm on Melbourne Cup Day to attend the races and have some fun."
McEvoy said it did come as a bit of a shock hearing the news that he might be joining Hawthorn in 2014, but things had settled down now.
"Now that I'm over the initial shock, I'm rapt with the opportunity," he said.
"I didn't know anything about the trade prior to it happening. I was overseas and received a call asking the question. I guess the Saints in a way were willing to let me go, so to have the reigning premier chase me was a real honour."
As well as enjoying handball and kicking drills with children at the Melbourne Cup Day races at Stawell, Ben will also be a guest at the Stawell Racing Club's Cup Day Luncheon.
Tickets are still available for the luncheon, by phoning 0409 953 023. The luncheon cost of $65 per person includes entry to the races, a two course luncheon in the upstairs dining room, race book and a standard beverages package.
Stawell's Melbourne Cup Day races will be the showpiece amongst a big week of action at the Stawell Racecourse.
The activities will kick off with the Beatles Tribute Show featuring Rubber Soul in an open air concert at the racecourse on Saturday, November 2. The race day will prove a feature on Melbourne Cup Day and then the Grampians Wildflower Ride will commence from the racecourse on Sunday, November 9.
