STAWELL - Parents of young children are being encouraged to go along and find out why kindergarten is important for laying the foundations for a successful education as part of a special event in Stawell to celebrate Children's Week.
The Stawell Kindergarten Expo will be held from 7pm - 8pm on Wednesday, October 23 at the Stawell Football Clubrooms at Central Park Oval.
There will be guest speakers, hands on activities and displays.
Children's Week is a nation-wide celebration of the youngest people in our communities and this year, Children's Week shines a light on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child - the right of every child to engage in play.
The Victorian Government is supporting local councils, schools, early years services and community organisations to hold hundreds of free events that promote the value of play.
Playing is after all one of the most powerful vehicles for learning, with benefits that can last a life time.
Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development Wendy Lovell said Children's Week which runs from Saturday, October 19 to Sunday, October 27 is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the young people in our communities.
"The Victorian Government is pleased to be supporting Children's Week by providing each local council and stakeholders with grants to host free special events or celebrations and I am delighted to see these Victorian Government grants being put to good use.
"From movie sessions, to face painting, to kids cooking classes and a teddy bears' picnic, there are so many different events for children to enjoy.
"Victoria is joining all Australian states and territories in celebrating Children's Week, which recognises the talents, skills and achievements of young people."
In 2013, Children's Week in Australia shines a light on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and focuses on what some commentators have called the forgotten article - the right of every child to engage in play.
"Children's Week is also a great time to get to know your local children's services, including kindergartens, early learning centres and Maternal and Child Health services," Mrs Lovell said.
"I encourage you to visit your local centres and find out about the specialist early childhood education and health services right on your doorstep.
"Providing families with easy-to-access, high-quality early learning and care is crucial in setting young children on the path to a happy, healthy and rewarding life.
"I look forward to joining you in celebrating Children's Week and hope you will take advantage of these terrific free local events and activities."
