REGION - Meals on Wheels volunteers in the Northern Grampians Shire took centre stage on Wednesday, August 28 when their enormous contributions were marked on the 60th National Meals on Wheels Day.
The event aimed to recognise the work of more than 75,000 volunteers Australia wide.
In the course of a year, they deliver some 14 million meals to more than 80,000 people in cities, regional and rural areas.
Northern Grampians Shire Council Aged and Disability Service Team Leader Melissa Mair said the service fosters important community connections.
"Meals on Wheels is more than just a meal. It is a vital service that provides clients with social contact and peace of mind," she said.
"In the past 12 months, Northern Grampians Shire Council's Meals on Wheels service provided a total of 17,837 meals to 234 clients in Stawell and St Arnaud.
"This is an average of 49 meals a day.
"Our volunteers make a real difference to these people's lives and they deserve to be acknowledged for the wonderful work they do."
