Recycling programs relaunched

REGION - Axis Worx and Grampians Regional Waste Management Group are joining forces to relaunch the Blinky Bulb and Batteryback recycling programs across areas including the Northern Grampians and Ararat councils.

People will now be able to drop off their used CFL globes and tubes and old household batteries at a range of locations across the shires.

"These programs have been around for a few years now and by working with Axis Worx we have been able to streamline them to ensure that people get a consistent message and a regular pick-up service in each of the council areas that we operate in," GRMWG regional education officer, La Vergne Lehmann said.

The places that people can drop their used CFL globes and tubes and all household batteries include:

Ararat - McArthur's Mitre10, 20 Campbell Street, Ararat; Horsham - Thrifty Link Hardware, 94-96 Wilson Street, Horsham; Marnoo - Marnoo Recycling, Park Street, Marnoo; St Arnaud - Home Hardware, 2 Raglan Street, St Arnaud; Stawell - David O Jones Mitre 10, Western Highway, Stawell and Lyal Eales, Main Street, Stawell; Warracknabeal - Die Vries Electrics Retravision, 57 Scott Street, Warracknabeal.

"Axis Worx has been developing a range of recycling programs in their operation recently and by working with GRWMG we are able to expand some of our services to include the collection of the batteries and CFL globes," Bill Schmidt, from Axis Worx said.

Keeping batteries and CFL globes and tubes out of landfill is important because they all contain hazardous chemicals that could ultimately contaminate soil.

"What we don't want is these items being put in household recycling bins or landfill waste and by making it relatively easy for people to get rid of them we are able to ensure that are dealt with in an appropriate way," La Vergne Lehmann said.
