Fitzell sizzles to top the points

STAWELL - Bill Fitzell returned to the Grange Golf club house a winner in the weekly veterans stableford competition.

Another warm day was in store and Fitzell was in sizzling form, firing off 14 to bring in the top score of 43 points.

Grange's new member, Robert Davis from Ararat, has started to settle in to the club and the course after two rounds.

His first round playing off 18 was a respectable 36 points but with his handicap reduced to 17, he was the runner up to Fitzell with 41 points.

Not only that, Davis rubbed salt into the wounded long-established members by being nearest to the pins on both the difficult second hole and on the 14th hole.

It has been suggested that it is now time to throw in a mixture of stroke and stableford competitions over the remainder of the summer season to give the lower handicapped players a more even playing field.

With the sun-dried course allowing even moderate golfers to achieve long distances for their mediocre strokes and to be able to putt from 50 metres over bare ground (only handicapped by kangaroo droppings), the course is giving them an unfair advantage.
