Wildcats set their sights on Coasters

STAWELL - Crush Fitness Stawell Wildcats will take on Portland tomorrow night for their last Country Basketball League home game of the season.

Following strong, positive play from the team last weekend against Mt Gambier Lakers, Stawell will go into the game upbeat and looking to take the game to the Coasters.

With the inclusion of Blake Danstan at the point, the big bodies of Dean Mannington (for his first home game) Shane Field and Brenton O'Brien, plus the returns of Matthew Bourke and Richard Hackwill, it will free up Joel Freeland to play more of a natural game for him off the wing.

Young guns Zac Salmi, Rory Jones and Micheal Hackwill are set to run the floor with Aiden Lee.

"We are looking to finish this season strongly and in a positive frame of mind to set the tone for next season," Wildcats coach Trevor Holmes said.

Wildcats gave Mt Gambier a fright last week by matching them in the first quarter, 19-13.

"Our starts this season have been a problem, so to do that to a top side means we are moving in the right direction," Holmes said.

Jarred Ohayon led the way once again with 16 points and had a strong finish in the final quarter.

Shane Field kept Lakers big man Mitchell Mott reasonably quiet, while Dean Mannington played a solid first game and Brenton O'Brien is gaining fitness with worthy results.

In the end, Mt Gambier were much too strong for Stawell with Simon Berkelfield hitting 32.

Although Stawell went down 46-103, it was an improved effort with the Wildcats doubling their previous score against the top of the table Lakers.

Coach Trevor Holmes believes his side can record its maiden win.

"Portland are beatable and we can match it with them so we will see what the game brings," Holmes said.

Crush Fitness Stawell Wildcats would like to see a big home crowd tomorrow night to enable the team to show their appreciation and to thank sponsors, so get along to the 'Den' (Stawell Leisure Complex) for a 7pm tip off.
