Tennis opener delayed

10/10/2008 7:36:00 AM
The opening round of the Stawell Tennis Club's Saturday competition has been delayed due to a lack of available players.

Club secretary Angela Solyom said a large number of players were unavailable for tomorrow's opening round which forced the match committee to shift it to October 18.

``We had notification from a number of players across all teams that were going to be unavailable for this weekend's opening round,'' she said.

``We decided on Tuesday night while selecting teams to delay the opening of the season so that all teams would have a better chance at having full lists.''

Solyom said the match committee discussed a range of options, including playing tonight or starting later on the Saturday, but felt the extra week off would benefit all teams.

She said that any players who were available should attend for a social hit at the courts from 3pm tomorrow.

``While a number of people will be unavailable, we understand that a large majority of the players will be keen for a hit,'' Solyom said.

``Hopefully we can get a good crowd at the courts tomorrow to have a practice hit and stay around for a few drinks.''

The match committee has released the six teams that will fight out the premiership this season.

Teams have been named after famous bands and include Bee Gees, Milli Vanilli, Village People, Abba, Kiss and Monkees.
