Pacing Cup stepping up a level

06 Nov, 2009 08:50 AM
When the barrier releases the field for the Stawell Toyworld Stawell Pacing Cup on Sunday, November 15, the feature event will be run at Group three level for the first time.

The Stawell Harness Racing Club has celebrated the elevation of its signature event to black-type status with an injection of funds that take its total value to $30,000, but that isn't the only way the SHRC is celebrating its biggest day of the year.

It has also organised a host of on-course activities and made another concerted effort to ensure there is something there for everyone.

In an added bonus, the SHRC will throw open the gates and waive the admission fee. Those who take advantage of the free entry will be greeted by the usual plethora of kids activities including jumping castle, face painting and free showbags.

Cup sponsor Toyworld is demonstrating their support of the program by offering a $500 voucher that will be given away to one lucky racegoer. Adults haven't been forgotten either. Punters get to show their wares in the Pick Four competition, which carries a $1000 jackpot, while one patron will win $500 worth of fuel.

The bar and Trackside bistro will be open from 4.30pm for anyone looking to dine before the meeting.

SHRC secretary Lisa McIlvride said the township was rippling in anticipation of the most significant edition of the race first run in 1961, which returns to a Sunday twilight after last year being run on a Monday afternoon.

``The elevation to Group three status and record prizemoney mean this year's Stawell Toyworld Stawell Pacing Cup will be the most important yet,'' McIlvride said.

``Accordingly, we have planned a huge day of activities. With the return to a Sunday timeslot and free entry, we think as many people as possible should be able to get along and celebrate with us.''

The Cup isn't the only race on the eight-event card carrying a record stake with the Bayunga Lodge Stawell Trotters Cup carrying a $10,000 prize.
