 Hughes takes out aggregate

Hughes takes out aggregate

31 Dec, 2009 08:03 AM
Thirty one shooters were in attendance for Callawadda-Stawell Gun Club's annual Christmas shoot.

The day's program included the Christmas championship event and three novelty events.

Comfortable temperatures and only a slight breeze helped shooters produce good scores.

The opening event, the 25 Target Christmas double barrel championship saw 10 shooters post possibles.

In the ensuing shoot off shooters kept breaking targets. Seven made it to 50 including Kate Mulvenney, who registered her first 50 break and won B grade.

Only four shooters, two AA shooters and two A graders, were left at 60. Neil Cracknell from Maryborough was first to go out, then new club president Chris Jorgensen.

Greg James and Robert Jorgensen were left to fight it out. Greg missed his 71st target and Robert broke his and took out the overall win.

Local member Daniel Reading took out C grade with 23/25.

The first of the novelty events was the 10 target crazy quail. Competitors had to shoot at targets thrown from a concealed trap which rotated 360 degrees.

Some targets were close but others were a long way out. Shooters were considered ready the moment their gun was closed.

Jamie Redford, Chris Jorgensen, Dimboola's Alan Jones and Jim Sawyer were the best performers with 8/10.

This event was very popular and most shooters believed they could improve with another round.

Next was five pair of double rise, where shooters were thrown a pair of targets and had to try and break them both with their two shots.

Robert Jorgensen was the only clean shooter with 10/10. Six others Ararat's Gary Grant, Neil Cracknell, Colin Dunn, Tim Hughes, Mathew Hall and Jim Sawyer were only one target away on 9/10.

The final event was the one target single barrel. This is shot similar to a shoot off miss and you walk back to the club house.

Four shooters did an excellent job and made it to 30. At 37 Greg James and Robert Jorgensen stumbled and left Leon Gibson and Tim Hughes.

They reached a gentlemen's agreement on 40. Leon was declared the victor.

The J & A Fencing High Gun was taken out by Jim Sawyer with 43/46. Des Martin earned the Junior High Gun award with 35/46.

At the shoot the Callawadda/Stawell Gun Club announced its aggregate winners for the year.

All scores in double barrel and points score events were tallied. With a percentage of 99 Tim Hughes took out the overall aggregate.

A grade went to Robert Jorgensen, Greg James won B grade and Chris Pascall claimed the C grade trophy.
