Great Western Cup hailed a success

10 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
GREAT WESTERN - This year's Seppelt Salinger Great Western Cup has been hailed a success, with crowd numbers well up on the previous year.

Racegoers were treated to a great day out that saw Luke Oliver-trained veteran gelding Scenic Scene take out the Great Western Cup by a length from Sagwala.

Great Western Racing Club track manager Carl Barry said the track went well.

"Stewards and jockeys were extremely happy with the track. As far as I know, no horses pulled up sore. I spoke to owners and trainers and they said the track raced really well," Mr Barry said.

"The whole day was really good and crowds were up on last year. We've exceeded the industry gate attendance standards of $10,000, with an estimation of an attendance between 1200-1600."

Marquee organiser Wendy Cairns said marquees were 'well up on last year.'

"It was really good and really well-supported. It was a young crowd and the corporate area was also up. We were up across the board," Ms Cairns said.

The Amcal Birdcage was back this year and Ms Cairns was delighted with the response.

"The Birdcage was really good. It's right in the hub, so the crowd got to see everything but at the same time have their private area. We're hoping for growth next year," Ms Cairns said.

"Thank you to Seppelts and Amcal for their support."

Fashions on the field was again popular, with the men's section opened for the first time this year.

It will return next year, possibly with a contemporary section as well as a traditional dress section.

Also returning this year was the Tucker's Hill Boat Regatta, which was once again a success thanks to support from local businesses.

Fifteen boats entered, with The Cool Runnings team of Tieran Vos, Scott Rathgeber, David Chalmers and Damien

Smith aiming for a winning trifecta.

However it was not to be, with this year's honours going to Bobby Garley, Sonny Walton, Brent Tate and Blaire Spalding.

Organiser Tara Cadzow said the event will be held again next year.

The weather was perfect for this year's event, and Mr Barry said both patrons and major sponsor Seppelts were happy.

There was no trouble on the day either, with police saying the crowd was extremely well behaved.

A bus service was run by Great Western Football Club between the racecourse and Stawell and the surrounding area, with Mr Barry branding it 'a worthy venture' and Ms Cairns describing it as 'a hit.'

"The footy club - Danny Hoare and the crew - did a really good job," Mr Barry said.

"Thank you to the committee and friends, the TAC, Seppelts and all our other race sponsors," he said.

Great Western Racing Club is already looking ahead to 2013, with the Seppelt Salinger Great Western Cup falling on Australia Day - January 26.
