Did We Win in Donald Cup win

18 Nov, 2011 12:00 AM
DONALD - Did We Win returned after a disastrous Ararat Cup meeting to take out the Donald Cup at the weekend.

Trained by Stawell-based father and daughter Terry and Karina O'Sullivan, the seven year old gelding was sitting sixth with 800 metres go, sliding into second at the last 400 metres, before storming home to win the 1620 metre Donald Cup by almost three lengths.

Trainer Terry O'Sullivan was delighted with the gelding's win.

It was a big turnaround for Did We Win who had a disastrous start in his previous race, the Ararat China Bowl.

"He was very, very unlucky in the China Bowl, he blew the start badly," O'Sullivan said of the gelding who managed to finished fifth.

However, O'Sullivan maintained the faith in his charge.

"We were very confident heading into this race," O'Sullivan said.

"He had plenty of speed, it worked out perfectly."

O'Sullivan's only concern heading into the race was favourite Nicastro, who had run at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day, finishing third in the 7News Plate.

However, there was no need to worry with Redhead Rage coming in second and Nicastro relegated to another third place.

Did We Win will be heading to Sandown tomorrow week.

O'Sullivan is bullish about his chances with Did We Win coming up against a much stronger field.

"But he is racing very well, and will be running in a well-respected race," he said.

Another O'Sullivan trained horse, Viva Delspec, had a win in the race prior to the Donald Cup - the EST Rev Toy/Signs R US Country Showcase 2000 metre handicap.

O'Sullivan was happy with the win.

"He went really well, he's a good horse," O'Sullivan said of the five year old, who is raced by a syndicate of owners from Stawell.

Viva Delspec raced at Stawell late last month and started slowly before sprinting to the finish, placing third.

However, O'Sullivan described the gelding's latest race as a good, genuine staying race.

"He came from a long way back - he won, and won well," O'Sullivan said.

Viva Delspec was 10th with 800 metres to go, fourth at the 400 metre mark before racing away to win by a short half head from Bel Sir.

The gelding will race at Ballarat on Sunday and O'Sullivan is confident he will run well.

Both Did We Win and Viva Delspec had successful jockey Clare Lindop on board..
