Southern Roos into grand final

15 Sep, 2009 08:31 AM
A last gasp effort by Harrow-Balmoral has booked them a ticket in this Saturday's Horsham District Football League grand final against Kalkee.

As the breeze made things hard for the Southern Roos in the first term, their opponents Laharum made the most of the advantage by piling on four goals to take a first up 26 point lead.

Harrow struck back at the Mountain Men in the second quarter, but failed to use the ball as effectively as they would've liked, having eight shots for three goals.

Laharum onballers Steve Thomas and coach Damien Bunworth were running riot, swooping on every loose ball that they could and halting Harrow's forward attack to see them nine points ahead at the half time.

Another big effort from the Mountain Men in the third term saw them get the jump on Harrow, slamming home four goals to two and holding a strong 23 point lead going into the final term.

Going into the final half an hour of play Laharum looked to have the better of the Roos, but with their season in the balance they flicked a switch that turned the tables around.

Two goals in the opening minutes had them ready to pounce, then a 40 metre snap from forward James Staude and a long bomb from joint coach Matt Ward had them in front.

The hard running out of the midfield dried up for the Mountain Men as Harrow took control of the play to turn the game around and finish with eight goals for the quarter.

The 30 point result was devastating for Laharum who had the game in their grasp before the final term blow out.

Harrow's young ruckman Anthony Close was again best for the winners, while Max Leeming, Justin McPhee and Quentin Willmott stood up when the heat was really on.

Laharum were best served by Steve Thomas and Mal Adams, with Lucas Smith playing a cracking game and Hamish Roberts getting his hands on the ball plenty of times.

Rupanyup reserves have progressed through to the grand final, escaping with a six point win against Harrow-Balmoral in overtime.

Scores were locked at 48 points each with two five minute periods being played to determine a winner.

The Panthers will play Kalkee in their first grand final for 19 years.
