Combine cruising

21 Nov, 2008 08:24 AM
The Swifts/Great Western juggernaut is likely to roll on when it meets Youth Club in Grampians Cricket Association tomorrow.

The combine sit second on the A grade ladder following their round four defeat of Tatyoon, condemning the reigning four-time premiers to their second consecutive loss of the season.

Adding to the combine's cause tomorrow will be return of key batsman Travis Nicholson. Nicholson has played just one match this season, which produced a brilliant 116 against Aradale at North Park.

Nicholson will help bolster the batting stocks led by in form Bill Norton (195 runs this season), Craig Marrow, Nic Clough and Gary Ranton, which is likely to pose too much power for the Clubbers' bowling stocks.

These stocks will be somewhat depleted tomorrow with opening pair Chris Jones and Dave Coventry both missing, placing very heavy responsibility on Marcus Marrow with the new ball. Spinner Rob Scott has been struggling with a back injury and has only bowled a handful of overs this season, leaving the Clubbers with little variety.

A big boost for the side however, will be the return of skipper Brett Jackson as well as the return of batsman Nathan Hargreaves, who plays his first game for the club since 2006/07.

The match will be played at North Park after being shifted from Central Park.

Tatyoon appears in danger of dropping its third straight match when it takes an undermanned team into tomorrow's clash with St Andrews at Alexandra Oval.

Captain Andrew McDougall, Tim McDougall, Andrew Ward and Richard Tucker will all be attending Zander McDougall's buck's party this weekend before missing the following week with the wedding. Matt Harris and English recruit Adam Walton are also in doubt for both weeks of the match, however, Geoff Phillips will help bolster the batting stocks with his return to the team tomorrow.

The Saints remain at the top of the ladder despite last weekend's three run loss to Aradale and will look to inflict further pain on the Hawks, who have been beaten in their past two clashes.

Pomonal is shooting for its third straight success of the season when it travels to Navarre tomorrow.

Pomonal, now third, have a good record against the Grasshoppers, who produced a gritty batting display to chase down Rhymney/Moyston's total of 197 on Saturday.

Boasting competition leading runscorers Brendon Rudolph (240) and Clayton Mackley (239), Pomonal is well placed to make a big total but will be lacking firepower in the bowling department due to the long-term departure of youngster Tristan Hilbig. Hillbig will be overseason for around 10 weeks before returning late in the season.

Navarre skipper James Devery is one who must fire in the batting department following his unbeaten 59 on Saturday, while Trent Milne, Greg Bibby and Rob Summers have shown they can score quickly when they get it right. Spinner John Costello will do the bulk of the bowling and has a good record against most teams in the competition.

Rhymney/Moyston hosts Aradale tomorrow, still in search of its first points of the season.

The team will be disappointed it could not contain Navarre last weekend after appearing in a strong position at stumps on day one, but will be at it again tomorrow, looking to halt Aradale.

David Cosgriff bowled beautifully to snare eight wickets last weekend but more is needed from the likes of James Davis, Matt Dean and Luke Robinson with the ball to stop talented Aradale bats Travis Horvatek, Clinton Rodger and Brent Tate as well as the hard-hitting Nathan Richards and Matt Baldock.
