Around 600 people filled Cato Park to support Walktober, a joint VicHealth and Kinect Australia initiative aimed at highlighting the broader community and social benefits of walking.
Students from Skene Street School, St Patrick's, 502 and Stawell West Primary Schools joined a number of community groups for a half hour walk around the lake.
Although the weather outlook was a bit uncertain the rain held off and the sun shone brightly throughout the morning.
Kate from Stawell Regional Health got the crowd going with a fantastic 15-minute warm up.
After the leisurely journey around the lake, walkers cooled down with a short tai chi session led by a professional instructor.
Participants then enjoyed a range of fruit platters to conclude the event.
The community initiative was organised in partnership by Northern Grampians Shire, Grampians Community Health and Stawell Regional Health to celebrate the benefits of walking for fun, fitness, transportation and socialisation.
The event was linked with the Stawell Regional Health Walking Group which promotes regular walking. The Stawell Community Walking Group is open to all ages and abilities and is conducted each Thursday between 9.30am and 10.30am. Residents interested in taking part should meet at Cato Park (Victoria Street side).
