Portable classrooms need replacing

03 Nov, 2009 08:29 AM
Northern Grampians Shire is reported to have thirty-two relocatable classrooms that are currently in use.

A report released by the State Opposition claimed that the majority of the portable classrooms in use are more than 20 years old.

The classrooms were put in place as a temporary measure to accommodate an influx of students at one time or another, but many are run down or out of date.

``Any parent would be appalled and shocked to learn of the high number of old portable classrooms in use across Victoria,'' Shadow Minister for Education, Martin Dixon said.

``According to Freedom of Information documents released by the Brumby Government, 5,849 relocatable classrooms are currently in use, with almost 500 of them being over 40 years old.

``The Brumby Government needs to stop all the self-promotion and allow our children to shine in modern classrooms, instead of ancient deteriorating portables.

``It is conceivable that in some schools, three generations of one family could have been educated in the same portable `temporary' classroom, which makes a mockery of the Brumby Government's claim that education is its number one priority.''

Concongella Primary School currently has four portables, one of which is almost 45 years old.

Principal Dale Power said he hoped the `old' portable would be removed soon.

``That one is going soon, we hope. It's an old, ugly building,'' Mr Power said.

Skene Street School in Stawell currently has three relocatable classrooms, which have been moved in from places such as Horsham and Snake Valley. A spokesperson said he was not sure exactly how old the buildings are, but the Freedom of Information documents place the buildings at an average age of 30 years.

The spokesperson said that while the buildings have served their purpose, the number of students is too great for the area that they have.

Fortunately, a new school is being constructed and will no longer have use for the relocatable classrooms, which will be moved onto another school.

Stawell Secondary College currently has two portable classrooms in use, and Vice Principal Murray Hart said they have been there since the school was established forty years ago.

Mr Hart said that according to Government policy, each school is allocated a certain number of rooms. However, Stawell Secondary is currently classified as over-entitled, which means that the portable classrooms could be taken away at any stage.

This would leave the school with an insufficient number of rooms to teach students in.

``On paper the school seems over-entitled, but you can't teach ordinary classes in an automotive room, or a locker bay,'' Mr Hart said.

Mr Hart said that while the school currently has an adequate number of rooms, he would much rather have permanent buildings that could not be taken away.
