"It was a pleasure to meet with CEO Justine Linley and Mayor Dorothy Patton to learn about some of the fantastic initiatives underway in the shire and discuss how we can work together to secure a bright future for this western Victorian community," Senator McKenzie said.
Senator McKenzie was particularly impressed by the economic diversity of the shire, with the importance of agriculture, tourism, manufacturing and mining sectors all highlighted in her discussions with council.
Council representatives spoke with Senator McKenzie about the challenge of meeting diverse skills needs to support each sector and the requirement for a cooperative approach by all levels of government.
"The council also spoke of their desire for improved Bureau of Meteorology data to assist with land planning issues and help the community maximise agricultural production," Senator McKenzie said.
She said Horsham Rural City Council had also spoken to her of its need for more accurate rainfall information.
Senator McKenzie thanked the Northern Grampians Shire Council for sharing its time and knowledge of the region.
"The region has just experienced an exciting Easter weekend with the running of the famous Australia Post Stawell Gift bringing thousands of visitors to this beautiful part of the world," Senator McKenzie said.
"I'm sure they would have been just as smitten as I am."
Senator McKenzie's local government listening tour has taken her to about 30 councils across regional Victoria.
