Climate torch to tour Stawell

5/09/2008 9:20:00 AM
The local community is being encouraged to head down to Central Park and welcome the Climate Torch to Stawell.

Created by the designers of the Sydney Olympics torch, the Climate Torch is an iconic symbol of the nation's determination to avert dangerous climate change.

The torch itself features four power sources; solar power, a wind turbine, people power in the form of a hand-crank, and a lemon battery.

Fruit and vegetables produce an electric charge and can be used as batteries.

Two electrodes are plugged into the lemon, creating a fruit battery that embodies the innovation and creativity that will create innovative solutions to climate change in the future.

Stawell is one of many communities across the country which is hosting the Climate Torch during its six week tour.

The GetUp Climate Torch Relay will tour across Australia through rural towns and capital cities in every state and territory as it makes its way to Parliament House in Canberra on September 21.

Along the route, local communities are hosting legs of the relay, which calls on the country's leaders to halve Australia's greenhouse pollution by 2020.

``We do have the power to ensure a sustainable future for the next generation, and it is hoped that people of all ages will show their communities and their politicians that we need to act now,'' organiser of the Stawell leg, Jane Marriott said.

Due to local community nominations Stawell has been selected as one of the communities to host the torch.

The torch is due to arrive at Central Park at 12 noon on Saturday, September 13.

As a part of welcoming the torch to Stawell, local event organisers are hoping to organise a human sign of `we have the POWER' on the grass of Central Park with a photo taken from the grand stand. The torch will make its way up Main Street after the human sign has been made.

A free sausage sizzle will be provided by the Stawell Lions Club and information will be available on what can be done to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The day promises to be great fun, with plenty of willing people being encouraged to head down to Central Park with family and friends.

People are encouraged to walk, cycle or car pool to the event.

If it is wet on the day, people are asked to bring umbrellas to help make the sign and keep dry from the elements.

Organisers are largely relying on people power to spread the word and are challenging everyone who attends to bring at least five people along to the event.

For more information, or if you would like to be involved in the event, information distribution or in the torch relay, please call Jane on 5356 2529.
