Brambuk - The National Park and Cultural Centre took out the HOSTPlus Award for Indigenous Tourism at the prestigious Melbourne Airport 2009 Victorian Tourism Awards.
More than 100 leading Victorian businesses and individuals competed for top honours in various categories at Monday night's ceremony, which was held at Melbourne's Crown Casino.
Brambuk chief executive officer Jeremy Clark was pleased with the result and said the win was a great credit to staff and management.
``We thought we were in with a chance because we're fairly well known and an iconic attraction in Victoria, but you're always a bit nervous because you never know whether you're going to win or be a finalist,'' he said.
A lot of work went into the lengthy application and submission process, with Brambuk needing to show it met certain criteria.
``We had to show improvements in business over the past 12 months, that it is a sound business in both financial and management terms and a whole range of other things,'' Mr Clark said.
Mr Clark said he hoped the award would help attract more visitors to Brambuk.
``Having the award logo on our marketing and advertising campaigns will assure people that they're coming to a quality experience and hopefully that does influence people to visit,'' he said.
Mr Clark said while winning the award fosters confidence in visitors, it also creates awareness within the industry.
``Recognition within the industry is very important,'' he said.
``We all need to work together and to be recognised by your peers is always very good.''
Winners of Victorian Tourism Awards are automatically entered into the 2010 Australian Tourism Awards, to be held in Hobart in February.
A win at national level would be the icing on the cake for Brambuk as it celebrates 20 years of operation in 2010.
``If we win it'd be a huge bonus because no other Victorian business has ever won the national Indigenous Award,'' Mr Clark said.
For now, Mr Clark is happy enough to enjoy this year's accolade.
``It's a very positive thing to take out the award in our 19th year,'' he said.
``It shows we're still going strong, still here and still operating a well-run organisation.''
Minister for Tourism and Major Events Tim Holding congratulated all the entrants and said they are integral to the success of the State's outstanding tourism industry.
``In what has been a particularly challenging year, it is the outstanding contribution of tourism operators that ensures tourism in Melbourne and regional Victoria remains strong,'' he said.
``While most other parts of Australia have seen a downturn in tourism, Victoria is showing resilience in the face of the Global Financial Crisis and the devastating Black Saturday bushfires.''
Mr Holding said Victoria's overall international visitor numbers remain strong.
He also said international visitors are spending at record rates and staying for longer, which are encouraging signs for the local tourism industry.
