Australia Day activities

24 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
REGION - Northern Grampians Shire will be a hive of activity this Thursday when residents gather to celebrate Australia Day.

Council will host events in Stawell and St Arnaud, while Marnoo, Stuart Mill, Navarre and Great Western will also mark the occasion.

Mayor Cr Dorothy Patton is encouraging residents to attend their local event and celebrate what it means to be Australian.

"Australia Day is a chance for our communities to come together and show their patriotism and pride in our nation," she said.

"It is always a pleasure for Council to announce these awards which honour the contributions made, often very quietly, by local people to their local communities."

Australia Day celebrations in the Northern Grampians Shire will commence at 8am with a barbecue at Pioneer Park in St Arnaud.

This will be followed by a flag raising ceremony at 9.30am and an address from Australia Day ambassador Dr Noel Alphins, founder of New Vision Clinics.

Cr Patton will then present St Arnaud's Australia Day awards.

Festivities will continue later in the day at Cato Park in Stawell. The event will kick off at 5.30pm and will feature female harness racing driver and Australia Day ambassador Amy Tubbs.

After the presentation of Australia Day awards, guests will be treated to a performance by the Stawell Brass Band, while a barbecue will take place from 6.30pm.

Cr Patton said Council was looking forward to welcoming Dr Alpins and Ms Tubbs to the shire.

"We are thrilled to be hosting two fantastic representatives from the science and sporting fields," she said.

"Both of our Australia Day ambassadors have inspirational stories to tell and I hope the community will take some time out of their day to attend their local ceremony."

Australia Day events will also be held at Marnoo, with a breakfast scheduled for 8am at the Marnoo Hall and an address from Maree Cullen on walking the Kokoda Track.

Other celebrations will be held at Stuart Mill Community Reserve from 7pm, Dadswells Bridge Hall at 11am and a 12 noon lunch at the Great Western Hall.

Halls Gap will also mark the day the Aussie way, with a barbecue due to get underway in the picnic area opposite the hall at 6pm. BYO drinks, plate, knife and fork.

Those planning to attend are encouraged to register their names at the Halls Gap Bakery or Newsagency for catering purposes.
